Dr. Kameen and his staff are skilled in all forms of vision correction, including PRK and NearVisionSM CK®. Located in Towson, Maryland and serving the entire Baltimore area, Kameen Eye Associates combines experience and technology to produce safe, accurate results.
PRK is offered to the Baltimore, Maryland area at Kameen Eye Associates. The procedure is similar to LASIK eye surgery in that it involves two steps. For both procedures, the first step is to create a tiny flap in the outer layer of the cornea so that treatment can reach the underlying inner layer . In LASIK, this flap is folded back during treatment, yet it remains attached. PRK, on the other hand, completely removes the flap during the procedure. Once the flap has been folded back or removed, the Laser Vision Correction (LVC) then continues in the same manner for both procedures. Laser treatment is performed on the inner layers of the cornea, and then the outer flap is re-attached. PRK was the first LVC procedure performed. Although it is a fine procedure, PRK has largely been replaced by LASIK and other techniques. PRK has become less popular because of the slower recovery process and somewhat greater discomfort as compared to LASIK. The procedure is still used occasionally for patients whose thin corneas make them ineligible for LASIK. Contact Kameen Eye Associates to schedule a free evaluation, in which Dr. Kameen will determine if PRK is the best procedure for you.
NearVisionSM CK® (Conductive Keratoplasty) is now available for Baltimore and Towson, Maryland residents at Kameen Eye Associates. NearVisionSM CK® is similar to LASIK in that both procedures involve changing the shape of the cornea to improve vision. However, both use different methods to accomplish this goal. The LASIK procedure uses a laser, but NearVisionSM CK® uses mild heat energy to change the curvature of the cornea. NearVisionSM CK® is optimized for each patient in order to produce the best possible results. The procedure is used to treat mild levels of hyperopia (farsightedness). A typical NearVisionSM CK® patient is over 40-years-old and has good distance vision, but needs glasses for reading. Watch a video to learn more about NearVisionSM CK®. If you have any questions about the procedure, please do not hesitate to contact our practice in Towson, Maryland. After a careful and thorough examination, Dr. Kameen can determine if NearVisionSM CK® is the vision correction method that best fits your needs.
EPI-K: EPI-K combines the quick recovery time of LASIK laser eye surgery with the adaptability to thinner corneas of PRK. The EPI-K device allows the surgeon to lift up (and preserve) the epithelium rather than remove it. It is then put back in position for faster healing and better comfort.
Intraocular Lenses: Intraocular Lenses (IOLs) have long been used during traditional cataract surgery. There is solid evidence, however, in which the lenses might be used in certain situations where laser vision corrections (LVC) might not be appropriate. Several types of IOLs are available. The IOLs take the place of the human lens, as well as accommodate, thus decreasing the need for reading glasses.
Verisyse™ Lenses: The Verisyse™ lens can be placed in a severely nearsighted eye that is beyond the abilities of traditional laser surgery. The human lens is left in place and the Verisyse™ lens acts as an implanted contact lens.
Other Lenses: The Crystalens®, ReSTOR® lens, and other lenses are put in place of the human lens, thus eliminating any preexisting cataract, as well as refractive error (nearsightedness or farsightedness).
To determine if you are a good candidate for any of the above procedures, including PRK and NearVisionSM CK®, contact Kameen Eye Associates in the Baltimore, Maryland area today. Dr. Kameen and his staff will perform a thorough evaluation to determine the procedure that will best fit your needs and provide you with the best possible outcome.
