The LASIK Procedure
LASIK laser eye surgery is a two-stage procedure designed to reshape the cornea in order to decrease the dependence or completely eliminate the need for eye glasses or contact lenses. Following an initial, complimentary LASIK eye surgery consultation at our office near Baltimore, Maryland, the first stage of LASIK surgery involves preparing the eye for Laser Vision Correction (LVC). This first stage has traditionally been performed using a device with a blade. Dr. Kameen has performed over 50,000 procedures this way with great success. Over the past several years, however, the mechanical procedure has been largely replaced by a laser device called the IntraLase®. The IntraLase® is a femtosecond (extremely fast) laser which creates the corneal flap with a dramatically reduced risk of complications, as well as improved outcomes.
Patients who could not previously undergo laser eye surgery (often due to thin corneas) can now be treated because of the IntraLase® device. We now use IntraLase® to create over 90 percent of our corneal flaps (Please visit our Resource/Video Center to learn more).
The second stage of LASIK laser eye surgery is performed using an excimer laser to reshape the cornea into its desired shape. The computer imagery of the desired shape is a product of the extensive testing performed by Dr. Kameen and his staff. Measurements such as corneal thickness, topography, corneal shape, refractive stability and severity, and general eye health are but a few of the factors that enter into the decisions that are made.
